Shawn Mendes is quickly becoming a household name in the teen pop genre, and he has decided to take his talents worldwide. Mendes announced earlier this week that he would be releasing his sophomore album later in September, and that he would be going on a 2017 world tour, titled, “Illuminate World Tour.” The name of the tour stems from his album title, Illuminate.
The Canadian singer/songwriter has many similarities with his fellow countryman Justin Bieber. Bieber is the undisputed pop icon so Mendes has a long way to go to be compared to JB, but he is heading in the right direction for now. There are many different ways to compare these two to see if Mendes has what it takes, so let’s get started.
Most Successful Singles – “Stitches” vs. “Baby”
Shawn Mendes doesn’t disappoint in this category, but the edge definitely goes to the Biebs. Mendes’ biggest single to date is “Stitches” off of his debut album, Handwritten. It peaked at number four on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and then cracked the top 10 in the U.S., Canada and the U.K., a very impressive feat. The song was a catchy summer anthem during 2015, but it could not top what Justin Bieber did with his. The stats are unreal for Bieber’s first single, “Baby.” He has come a long way from the baby-faced and soft-voiced Bieber that appears in this song, but it has gone Platinum twelve times over since 2010. The up tempo R&B track launched Bieber to unimaginable fame after just one record, and although Mendes brought the heat he comes up short in this category. Mendes’ live performance of this song will definitely get him a couple of extra points though.
First Album – Handwritten vs. My World 2.0
As far as I’m concerned, Mendes shouldn’t be winning any of these categories as Bieber is on his way to becoming a legend, but this one is surprisingly close. Handwritten was very well received by fans and has already gone certified Platinum in just over a year. Mendes was six months shy of being the youngest artist to have a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 album since, you guessed it, Justin Bieber did it back in 2010 with My World 2.0. Mendes sold 119,000 album equivalent units in his first week of sales in comparison to Bieber’s 283,000 units. My World 2.0 was a complete album, and Mendes’ was a little top heavy with hits like “Stitches” and “Life of the Party.” It was definitely an impressive debut for Mendes, and it has left fans highly anticipating his next project.
Best Award To Date
This is slightly skewed as well due to Bieber’s tenure on the music scene, but Shawn Mendes is starting to clean up at award shows as well. He’s tallied 11 awards in three years, and his best one to date was a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Breakout Artist in 2016. He won the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award in the same category as well so his fan demographic is extensive. It is also a good sign that he was able to win an award for Best Pop Video for “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” meaning that he is excelling both musically and artistically.
As for Justin Bieber he has already tallied over 100 awards in just over half a decade. It should be noted that they are not all music related, but it is an impressive number nonetheless. For the most part, Bieber was also making his mark on the People’s Choice Awards and MTV Video Music Awards, but any Hall-of-Fame caliber artist knows that Grammy’s are the real benchmark. He now has 3 Grammy nominations under his belt, but was able to win his first Grammy for Best Dance Recording in 2016. The award was for the song, “Where Are Ü Now,” a track on which Bieber laid down vocals for the EDM duo of Diplo and Skrillex, known as Jack Ü.
This might be the category where Shawn Mendes can distinguish himself from Bieber. Both artists burst on to the scene with a choir boy attitude that made teens and parents fall in love with their music. In Bieber’s defense not many teens can handle the amount of fame and fortune he has accumulated at such a young age, but as a role model for so many his lapses in decision making have become nationwide stories. Whether it’s being a sore loser at the Grammy’s or public intoxication the spotlight can be a blessing and a curse for Bieber. Mendes, on the other hand, has kept a clean record while in the spotlight and would be wise to keep it that way. He may never be able to eclipse the success that Bieber has achieved, but if he tries to be Shawn Mendes instead of the next Bieber he’ll find success will come much easier.
Shawn Mendes kicks off his 2017 world tour in London at O2 Arena on June 1st. From there, he’ll spend the summer touring North America hitting almost every major venue. TicketNetwork is the spot where you can find Shawn Mendes tickets for his upcoming Illuminate World Tour.
