Electric Daisy Carnival, commonly referred to as EDC, is one of the largest electronic dance music (EDM) festivals in the world. This year’s EDC kicks off tonight in Las Vegas at 7PM local time. While many have heard of EDC, they don’t know much about it, so we decided to ask and answer ten questions about the annual event. Check them out below.
1. When and Where Was EDC First Held? How Many People Attended?
1996 at the Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles. There were about 5,000 attendees.
2. Is EDC Still Held in Los Angeles?
No, EDC was last held in Los Angeles in 2011. Since then, the flagship event has taken place in “Sin City” at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
3. What Do You Mean “Flagship Event”?
Over the years, EDC has held spinoff festivals for EDM fans across the globe. In years past, EDC spinoff festivals have taken place in cities like Chicago, New York City, Dallas, Orlando, San Juan, PR, Buckinghamshire, England, Mexico City, São Paulo, and Tokyo.
4. How Many Acts Perform at EDC?
While that number has varied over the years, over 250 acts are set to perform at this year’s EDC.
5. How Long Does EDC Last?
EDC started as a single day event, however, it eventually switched to two days. Since 2011, EDC has been a three day event. This year’s EDC kicks off tonight and runs through Sunday.
6. How Many People Usually Attend EDC?
While we don’t know the total attendance of the 2016 festival, last year, EDC drew over 400,000 people to the flagship festival in Las Vegas.
7. How Large is EDC Area Wise?
EDC takes up 910 of the 1,200 acres at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. For comparison, Coachella in Indio, CA covers a footprint of 600 acers, and Governors Ball in New York City takes up only a small portion of Randalls Island, which spans 520 acres.
8. 910 Acres of Speakers and Lights? How Much Energy Does that Use?
About 22.5 megawatts. Or, enough energy to power over 14,600 homes.
9. What Are Some of the Activities Available at This Year’s EDC?
Let’s see, attendees can walk through the Memory Lane video tunnel and take a look back at the history of EDM. There’s the kineticFIELD VIP Bubbles Bar, which only offers champagne, Bellinis, and mimosas. Each night at midnight, you can witness the EDC Parade, which features 19 “art cars” and costumed performer groups. Folks can make an appointment at kineticFIELD VIP Beauty Bar to have their hair and makeup done, as well as have body art applied. And for those who are at the festival with their significant other, they can tie the knot at the wedding chapel.
10. Wait, there’s a Wedding Chapel? How Many People Get Married at EDC?
Since EDC moved to Vegas, over 300 couples have been wed at the festival. Getting married at EDC has been so popular that the 2016 festival actually has two wedding chapels; one with a earth-inspired theme and one with a modern technology theme.
