Tuesday Takeaways – Eagles Fly and Jaguars Bite in Week 5 Action

Yet again it was a tough week to be a superstar in the NFL. Injuries played a vital role in the outcome of some of the games on Sunday. Seasons and expectations now have to be altered drastically in the coming weeks due to the injuries.

Offensive star Odell Beckham Jr. is out with an ankle fracture for the New York Giants. On the other side of the ball, J.J. Watt fractured his leg Sunday night for the Houston Texans. Both players are crucial to their team’s success. The season is definitely over for the New York Giants. The Texans can still rally, but it is an uphill battle without Watt.

The Giants undeniably got hit with the injury bug the hardest. They lost three wide receivers for the season on Sunday, while also seeing a few defensive backs suffer minor injuries.

It’s never easy seeing the emotions some players go through when they realize their seasons are over. Let’s transition to some of the teams and players that are still playing this season, and playing well.

Week 5 Winners

Philadelphia Eagles – The Wentz Wagon is officially full. After many football fans were unsure of the quarterback from North Dakota State after one year in the NFL, he has silenced the critics through Week 5 in his second season.

Carson Wentz lets if fly whenever he feels like it. Furthermore, his electric arm and ability to extend the play were on full display against the Arizona Cardinals. The Eagles jumped out to an early lead, and never looked back. With an array of weapons on the outside, the Eagles have one of the most potent offenses in the league.

Alshon Jeffrey, Nelson Agholor and Torrey Smith are all getting involved on a weekly basis. At 4-1, the Eagles are in the driver’s seat of the underwhelming NFC East. With LeGarrette Blount beginning to find his stride out of the backfield, look out for the Eagles moving forward.

Green Bay Packers – The Pack are back. After a few rocky performances early in the season, the Packers were in need of a statement win. Leave it to Aaron Rodgers to save the day. Just a few weeks ago, the Lions and Vikings looked to be in control of the NFC North. However, the script has flipped thanks to some late game heroics from Rodgers in the past couple weeks.

With 11 seconds remaining in the game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, Aaron Rodgers found Davante Adams in the end zone for a 35-31 win. A week after Adams was brutally hit after catching a pass against the Chicago Bears, he was the most reliable target for Rodgers.

Additionally, they also got a superb performance from the most unlikely of players.

Back up running back Aaron Jones got his first career start in the NFL after an injury to Ty Montgomery. Jones totaled 134 yards and scored a touchdown to give the Packers offense some much needed balance.

Week 5 Losers

Pittsburgh Steelers – On the other hand, some teams look like they lost their identity this weekend. Instead of feasting on a conference opponent at home, the Steelers were bitten by the Jaguars defense. After a 3-1 start that saw them rise to the top of the division, the Steelers had an opportunity to keep their foot on the gas.

However, the Jaguars defense had other plans. They forced five interceptions and returned two for touchdowns. The 30-9 win was a statement around the league that the Jaguars are no longer an easy opponent.

Meanwhile, the Steelers have to answer some very pressing questions. After losing to teams like Chicago and Jacksonville, they are not striking fear in to any of their opponents. They own the tiebreaker for first in the AFC North, but the Ravens are right on their heels. A reliance on the run game could change the outlook of the Steelers season. Instead of feeding LeVeon Bell, the Steelers are choosing to air it out with not much success.

Los Angeles Rams – I’m being a little harsh this week. Two teams with winning records find themselves in the Week 5 Losers section. However, the Los Angeles Rams had a statement win in their grasp and they let it slip away. With the Cardinals and 49ers struggling, it seems the division title will be won by the Rams or Seahawks.

After picking off Russell Wilson and kicking a field goal, the Rams were up 10-0 in the second quarter. Unfortunately they failed to score again. The Seahawks showed their championship DNA and clawed back to win 16-10.

Jared Goff finally looked human after being picked off twice. An early Todd Gurley fumble doomed the Rams as well. Instead of going up 7-0 in the opening quarter, the Rams were gut punched by the unlucky turnover at the pylon.

Week 5 Top Plays

Now time for everyone’s favorite segment, the week’s top plays. For the first time ever, special teams is dominating the top plays segment. There was also a crazy catch and run in Philadelphia that we all need to see again. Nelson Agholor, you’re up first.

There were plenty of big plays to choose from in the Philadelphia-Arizona game. One in particular caught our eye. Carson Wentz to Nelson Agholor looks like it will be a combination that will torture defenses for years to come.

Of course, bonus points for the spin move and celebration.

Next we move to the often overlooked aspect of pro football: special teams. This part of the game was huge during prime time. In the Sunday and Monday night football games there were must-see plays.

If you needed a reminder, Tyreek Hill is easily the fastest player in the NFL. He demonstrated that again during a punt return against the Houston Texans.

Finally, a fake punt for a touchdown! Who doesn’t love a successful trick play on special teams. Ultimately, the Chicago Bears lost a close game, but they were in it until the end.

Needing a spark at the end of the third quarter trailing 10-2, John Fox reached in to his bag of tricks and pulled out this gem. Pat O’Donnell to Benny Cunningham is the new dynamic duo in the Windy City.

Week 6 Must-See Match Ups

Carolina Panthers vs. Philadelphia Eagles – Finally a Thursday Night Football game worth watching! These two 4-1 teams will square off for the top spot in the NFC.

New England Patriots vs. New York Jets – Wait…what? The Jets and Pats are tied atop the AFC East at 3-2. For this reason, this surprising match up has major implications in the division moving forward.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Kansas City Chiefs – In my opinion, this will be the game of the week. A playoff rematch featuring two of the best teams in the AFC will be exciting to watch. In addition, two of the most dynamic players will be on the field.

Kareem Hunt as well as LeVeon Bell aret two of the best running backs in the NFL. Fans that tune into this game will see a number of highlights.

MLB Playoffs – Headlines and Heroes Always Arise in October

There’s nothing better than postseason baseball in October. Every inning, out, pitch and base runner matters that much more. The margin for error is almost reduced to none, and only the best advance.

As some of the series are currently underway and the rest get started this weekend, the race for the World Series is on. The Chicago Cubs have a chance to repeat. The Cleveland Indians have a chance at redemption. The Houston Astros have a chance to rally around their city. Additionally, the Los Angeles Dodgers can capitalize on one of the best seasons in the franchise’s history. Although it doesn’t look likely, the Red Sox and Yankees can renew their historic postseason rivalry as well.

The numerous possibilities are what makes postseason baseball so thrilling. Each player and team has their own role. As a result, the story lines that unfold throughout the playoffs are much like a suspenseful movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Here are some of the major players and teams to keep an eye on this postseason.

Aaron Judge – New York Yankees

All rise. Aaron Judge has started a movement in the Bronx. The literally larger than life baseball player has turned around the outlook of the Yankees. His incredible rookie season saw him smash records set by legends. He solidified his case for Rookie of the Year as well as inserted himself in the MVP discussion.

With 52 home runs, his colossal power has struck fear in to the hearts of many pitchers. He has a tough act to follow with some of the legends that have performed in the postseason for the New York Yankees.

He let the city know that his talent would come along with him for the postseason ride. Some stars are only able to produce in the regular season. However, Judge homered at a crucial point in the AL Wild Card against the Minnesota Twins.

Now the Yankees have the unenviable task of taking on the Cleveland Indians, the hottest team in the MLB Playoffs. Judge’s bat will be one of the major keys if the Bronx Bombers want to pull off the upset.

Clayton Kershaw – Los Angeles Dodgers

Different year, same story. Clayton Kershaw’s dominance is legendary. In this generation of baseball, it is undeniable that he is the best pitcher in the league. However, that dominance has yet to translate into postseason success. It appears the moment is too big for him at times. The idea of it is head scratching to say the least.

After another season that has him in the Cy Young discussion he will be tasked with starting Game 1 against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NLDS. His 4-7 record will be on the line against one of the hottest teams in the league. The Dodgers themselves boast a powerful offense, but we’ll see if it can keep pace with the Diamonbacks. Arizona won the NL Wild Card game 11-8, so they’ll be confident.

Kershaw needs to bring his A game. The Dodgers won an impressive 104 games this season and won their division by 11 games. He’ll know all this and realize that if they slip up in Game 1, the talk will only be about whether or not he was able to perform. Let’s see what you got Clayton Kershaw.

Bryce Harper – Washington Nationals

The electric Bryce Harper has some questions to answer in his own right. The Nationals have loads of talent, but have never made that deep run in the playoffs. His regular season was another reminder of just how special of a player he is. Although it was cut short with injuries, he still put up MVP caliber numbers.

He is a five tool player, a special talent and a very rich man. The only thing Harper has left to accomplish is bringing a World Series title to the nation’s capital. In their series against the Dodgers last season, Harper only mustered 4 hits and 1 RBI during their five game postseason run.

The supporting cast has gotten even better around Harper. That will take some pressure off of the young star, but it will also erase some of the excuses he was afforded. His power, speed and tenacity are all amazing to watch, but they need to show up when it matters most.

Jose Altuve – Houston Astros

It is not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog. Jose Altuve proves that on a daily basis for the Houston Astros. His Game 1 performance bolstered his MVP candidacy. Altuve smacked not one, not two, but three monster home runs to deflate the Boston Red Sox.

During the regular season the man was unstoppable as well. With over 200 hits for the fourth season in a row, Altuve is money at the plate. He has become one of the hardest outs to get in baseball. His .346 average and .410 on base percentage has led to his name being at the top of the list when it comes to discussing AL MVP.

Also, the Astros players have been revitalized by the epic support from the city in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Altuve and Houston are playing with a purpose, and as a result, they are the most motivated team still standing.

Young Stars Will Shine Bright on Opening Night in the NHL

One of the best times of the year in sports is about to get even better tonight. Professional leagues are nearing their conclusion, heading into mid season, or in the case of the NHL, just getting started. From Montreal to Minnesota and Calgary to Carolina, hockey fans everywhere are ecstatic.

Much like the NBA and the Golden State Warriors, the NHL landscape is being dominated by the Pittsburgh Penguins. The two-time defending Stanley Cup Champions will take center stage tonight. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have cemented their legacies as hockey legends. Although the night will be a celebration of their accomplishments over the past two years, there is another narrative that is taking center stage.

A recent wave of young talent in the NHL has changed the game. Franchises are investing millions of dollars in young athletes that aren’t even old enough to legally drink in some cases. Their skills are unmatched, but now they have a franchise on their shoulders heading in to this season. The future is there for the taking for these stars in the making.

Auston Matthews – Toronto Maple Leafs

Who knew Scottsdale, AZ would be the home one of the best and most explosive young stars in the NHL. Normally a kid from the North, Northeast or Europe would be first in line, but Matthews, only 20, has changed that narrative. He was first player to be drafted first overall that was born in the US since Patrick Kane. If you’re wondering, his career is turning out just fine.

For a debut, Matthews became the first player ever to score four goals in his first NHL game. He ended the season with 40 goals and 69 points. Additionally, those stats enabled Matthews to take home the Calder Trophy, the NHL equivalent of Rookie of the Year.

However, the most important aspect of Matthews’ rookie campaign was that the Maple Leafs returned to the playoffs. They expected a star, but got a franchise cornerstone for the next 10-15 years.

Patrick Laine – Winnipeg Jets

Right behind Matthews in more ways than one is Patrick Laine. He was drafted second overall, finished his rookie campaign with 36 goals and was second in the Rookie of the Year vote.

Laine was injured during his rookie season, hindering his stats a bit, but there is no doubt he is the future of the team. He is only 19, but led Winnipeg to an above .500 regular season. A native of Finland, Laine has been preparing for NHL stardom for his whole life. Now with that dream so close to being attainable, he will look to build on his early success.

The two will square off against each other to start off the regular season, and this is a match up you won’t want to miss. Laine is a creative player from the right wing position, and will put pressure on the Maple Leafs defense all night.

Jake Guentzel – Pittsburgh Penguins

Unfortunately, Crosby and Malkin can’t play forever. When the hang up the skates, the Pittsburgh Penguins will be in good hands. Jake Guentzel only managed to score 16 goals last season as a rookie, but came up big when it mattered most. He added 13 goals in the postseason, including four in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Relatively anonymous throughout the regular season, Guentzel was the catalyst for the Pens during their dominant run. He holds a share of the record for most points a by a rookie in single postseason, and has to be one of the most confident players in the game heading in to this season.

The Penguins quest for a repeat starts Opening Night in the NHL against the St. Louis Blues.

Connor McDavid – Edmonton Oilers

All three of the aforementioned players are chasing the legend that is growing in Edmonton. The Canadian born Connor McDavid is the second coming of Wayne Gretzky. Fans of the Oilers can only hope that his stats lead to Stanley Cups, which was exactly what The Great One was able to do.

McDavid didn’t win Rookie of the Year because of an injury. Otherwise he would have ran away with it.

However, he did not let that phase him as his sophomore season in the NHL was unforgettable. McDavid notched an incredible 70 assists, 100 points and won the Hart Trophy (Most Valuable Player). In his first full season, he made everyone on the Oilers a better player. His creativity and vision on the ice is unmatched.

In the playoffs he rose to the occasion as well. As a 20-year old he led the Oilers to an upset against the defending Western Conference champs, and then lost a tough second round series against the Anaheim Ducks in seven games.

McDavid has set the bar incredibly high for young athletes coming in the league that are expected to be stars. All four of these young studs will be on display during the first night of NHL action.

Tuesday Takeaways – SuperCam Shows Up and Deshaun Dominates

The NFL regular season is already a quarter of the way through. Week 4 provided us with some of the most exciting football yet. One possession games, last second field goals and overtime wins were all staples of Week 4.

Unfortunately, injuries were also a factor this week. A lot of high-level players went down with injuries, so even if your team got a win this week, questions might be looming.

In Atlanta, it seems like the scare was a brief one. After a hip injury kept Julio Jones on the sideline for the most of the game on Sunday, the Falcons have since reported that they expect the All-Pro wide receiver to be ready to go after the Falcons’ Week 5 bye.

In Oakland, they will have to keep their playoff hopes afloat without Derek Carr for a few weeks. After a great start to the season, the Raiders have dropped two straight and lost Carr against a tough Denver defense. Carr fractured a bone in his back and is expected to miss about a month.

In Seattle and Minnesota, the news is grim. Rookie running back Chris Carson was emerging as the best backfield option in Seattle. However, in the second half he suffered a broken leg and has been placed on injured reserve. Breakout star and Rookie of the Year candidate Dalvin Cook tore his ACL for the Minnesota Vikings during a big run against the Lions Sunday.

All key pieces, we are hoping for speedy recoveries for these dominant forces in the NFL.

From the trainer’s table to the playing field, here are my Tuesday Takeaways.

Week 4 Winners

Carolina Panthers – It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s just Super Cam, and he is just plain nasty. The former MVP faced questions all week that he had lost his form, his grip on the team and that the Panthers were pretenders even at 2-1. They suffered a disappointing home loss to the Saints, and then had to travel to Brady’s house at Gillette Stadium.

Analysts and experts predicted a blowout win for the Pats who had an epic comeback win in Week 3 and looked to be fully recovered from a Week 1 embarrassment against the Chiefs.

Cam Newton flipped the script on Sunday when he returned to MVP form. He had a better completion percentage, more yards and more touchdowns than Brady. Additionally, Newton showed up when it mattered most. After the Patriots trailed by 14, but tied it at 30 with just three minutes remaining, the game was setting up for another Patriots comeback.

Newton stayed poised and led the Panthers on a time consuming drive late in the game. A Graham Gano 48-yard field goal as time expired gave Carolina the win and landed them a spot on our Week 4 winners.

Houston Texans – Talk about a coming out party. Deshaun Watson has arrived. With 5 touchdowns against a division rival, the Texans have found themselves a leader. They have had a stout defense for years, but the quarterback position has been a question mark.

Watson was dynamic on Sunday. His arms and legs were equally effective, and the Tennessee Titans had absolutely no answer. He accounted for over 300 yards, and racked up 57 points. The point total was the largest in franchise history, as well as the highest margin of victory.

The running game with Lamar Miller was working well, and Pro Bowl wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was in the mix as well. The AFC South is one of the most wide open divisions in the league. With three teams sitting at 2-2, Houston has to love their position especially with Watson getting better every week.

Week 4 Losers

Miami Dolphins – Things are going south in a hurry in South Beach. After a fortuitous Week 2 win, the Dolphins have slipped up in their last two games. They have been outscored 40-6 in their last two games. Granted, both were on the road, but it is not looking good with Jay Cutler running the show in Miami.

The offense has been hard to come by. Jay Cutler’s quarterback rating has dipped below 30, an abysmal mark for a starting QB. The running game hasn’t been effective either. Jay Ajayi hasn’t been able to get going, and with Jay Cutler joining the team so close to the season, the Dolphins offense has yet to get on the same page.

The New Orleans Saints picked them apart in London in Week 4. With a 20-0 win, the game was never in doubt.

Averaging less than 9 points a game, changes need to happen fast in Miami. They made the playoffs last season with pretty much the exact same team. If Jay Cutler can’t lead them to a win at home next Sunday, Miami will be in a free fall.

Baltimore Ravens – The Ravens started the season with an impressive 20-0 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. From there, it has been a bumpy road. They traveled to London and lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars, 44-7. In Week 4, first place was on the line in the AFC North, and the Ravens were hosting their biggest rival, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Ravens fell behind 19-0, and went on to lose, 26-9. The inconsistency is alarming for Joe Flacco and the offense. If the Baltimore defense isn’t making plays, the whole team suffers.

At 2-2, they are not out of the division and playoff race, but the results are alarming at this point. With no clear cut choice at running back, step number one will be to become more balanced offensively. In Week 5, they go up against the Oakland Raiders without Derek Carr, and will need to take advantage.

Week 4 Top Plays

We have to start with a Hall of Fame walk-off touchdown in Week 4. Depending on your brand of football, the San Francisco-Arizona game was either wildly entertaining or painfully boring. During regulation, each side tallied four field goals. Tied at 12, the two teams went to overtime. The San Francisco 49ers were in great position to pull off an upset after an eight minute drive that resulted in a field goal.

Trailing 15-12, Arizona had to act fast to come back and win. They went with their most reliable connection to get the job done. Carson Palmer threw it up and one of the best wide outs to ever play the game came down with it. Larry Fitzgerald for the win!

Up next is a spectacular game-sealing interception. Usually a wide receiver has an advantage for a jump ball late in the game. However, Denver’s stingy defense has athletes at every position. Without Derek Carr in the game, Oakland still had a chance to win late. EJ Manuel chose to go up top to the number one target in Oakland, Amari Cooper.

Unfortunately, Cooper didn’t come down with it. The acrobatic play by Justin Simmons sealed the win for Denver.

Week 5 Must-See Match Ups

Detroit Lions vs. Carolina Panthers – Two first place teams will square off in the NFC. Can Cam Newton back up his performance or will Matthew Stafford continue to solidify his MVP candidacy at home?

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Arizona Cardinals – The battle of the birds and the battle of the Carson’s. Carson Wentz is putting up big numbers in Philadelphia while Carson Palmer is nearing the end of his run in Arizona. This is a pivotal game for both teams.

Dallas Cowboys vs. Green Bay Packers – In a rematch of an NFC Playoff game a year ago, the Packers and Cowboys are ready for this rivalry. Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott have incredible command of their respective offenses. Look for Ezekiel Elliott to the be the difference maker as Dallas has the much more diverse offense heading in to this match up.

Houston Texans vs. Kansas City Chiefs – The quest to remain undefeated continues during prime time on Sunday night. The Chiefs are 4-0 and are the only undefeated team left in the league. The Texans are in first place in the AFC South and are coming off of an impressive win at home that saw them put up 57 points.

Presidents Cup: International Team Searches for Second Win on US Soil

1998. That’s it. The only time the International team won the Presidents Cup was 20 years ago. The players on this year’s International squad are hungry, especially after a narrow defeat in 2015.

In 2017, the Presidents Cup heads to Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, NJ. The International team will have one of their best chances yet to dethrone the US and end their dominant run in this competition.

Golf has been labeled as a global game. However, the clear hierarchy is the United States, Europe and then everyone else.

In recent years the gap has closed. Asia and Australia have especially stepped their game up. South Africa always has a reliable player or two, and a recent rise from South America is exciting to see. The International team has always had good players, but now they have something better: depth.

Led by major champions and players that have skyrocketed in to the Top 30 in the World Golf Rankings, the International team can finally strike some fear in to the heart of their opponents. The American squad has grown accustomed to winning the Presidents Cup. They haven’t lost since the turn of the century so who can blame them.

Overall, Australia, Japan, South America, South Africa, South Korea and Canada are represented. This diverse team needs to come together quickly. Luckily, most of them already have Presidents Cup experience.

Unfortunately, this is also one of the youngest, most talented United States teams ever assembled. Major winners, Fed Ex Cup Champions and Top 10 players are littered throughout the team. Led by Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson, the US will not relinquish their title easily.

Conversely, the US just got over their long drought of coming up short in the Ryder Cup. A sliver of complacency and satisfaction might be just what the International team needs.

The competition itself desperately needs an International. Without it, this will continue to be a walk in the park to end the season for the US team. Here’s who will be crucial for the International squad if they want to get their hands back on the coveted Presidents Cup trophy.

The Leaders

Jason Day – This is the equivalent of an ace of a pitching staff in baseball. Jason Day is an incredible talent, especially in the past couple of seasons. He has won the PGA Championship, The Players Championship and rose to the number one player in the world at one point. Well on his way to a Hall of Fame career, the only thing he still has to cross off his list is a Presidents Cup win.

He has to be steaming over his previous performance in 2015. Day was the leader for the first time, but only managed to score 1/2 a point. Although this is a team competition and some of the results were out of his hand, even he will tell you has to do better. If a match goes a little differently over the course of the weekend, maybe the International team wins. However, that’s in the past.

Day is in good form once again and now that he knows what to expect he’ll be ready to attack.

Louis Oosthuizen – Another major champion, Louis Oosthuizen is built for the big moment. He performs the best when the pressure is at its highest. His third time as a team member of the Presidents Cup might be the charm for the team. In 2015, he was the star of the show. He did not drop a point the entire tournament, and had a thrilling singles match against Patrick Reed that ended up being halved.

Oosthuizen finished 2nd in the last major of the year this season, and had a decent showing in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He finished 31st, a spot out of qualifying for the Tour Championship. For Louis, this might have been best case scenario. He got a week off for the biggest tournament of the season, and will be ready to back up Jason Day as they head in to the Presidents Cup.

The Supporting Cast

Hideki Matsuyama – Matsuyama could easily be in the category above, but he’s not there just yet. He is now the No. 3 ranked player in the world, and had one of the best seasons of his young career. At 25, he is the star of the next generation for the International team, and if they win this year, Matsuyama will have his fingerprints all over it.

He scored 3.5 points in 2015, and the world took notice of his talent. Now in 2017 everyone knows his name. Pressure will be at an all-time high, but without Day, Oosthuizen and even Adam Scott still on the team, Matsuyama still has time to grow in to the leader. He is definitely the best player on the International team, but the verdict is still if he can handle the most pressure on the team.

Marc Leishman – A typical Aussie, Leishman is a go-with-the-flow, care-free golfer. He never lets anything on the course get to him, and that ability to stay level at all times is crucial in a competition like this. He has finished Top 20 in every major championship, and has a total of three career PGA Tour wins. The latest came in the 2017 FedEx Cup Playoffs. It was a dominant performance that gave him an outside chance at hoisting the FedEx Cup, but his bid came up short.
