Top 5 Concerts This Week
Barbra Streisand: Toyota Center│Houston, TX│November 27th
Barbra Streisand is one of the entertainment industry’s crown jewels. Her latest album Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 charts for the 11th time. Because of this feat, Streisand announced a limited tour that includes Houston, Tampa, Sunrise, and Miami during November and December. Her first show is in Houston on November 27th, and this string of four shows is part of her “The Music… The Mem’ries… The Magic!” Tour. This tour ran through the second half of 2016, and it seems to be finishing with these last few shows.
Barbra is nothing short of a superstar. With countless albums, television appearances, and stints on Broadway, she is the total package. Streisand’s elegant singing and acting abilities have landed her in some of the most iconic roles such as Funny Girl. According to online set lists, her tour comprises of two acts and over twenty songs, making the concert really worthwhile for any big Streisand fan.
Stevie Nicks & The Pretenders: Mohegan Sun Arena│Uncasville, CT│November 25th
Stevie Nicks is on tour with The Pretenders for her “24 Karat Gold” Tour that is two years after the release of her most recent album. Titled 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault, Nicks’ most recent album came out in 2014. She is now touring under a similar tour name. Nicks is arguably the most iconic female rock star in the industry with her time in Fleetwood Mac and extensive solo career. Rolling Stone has described her as “an intuitive, mystical, prolific composer with a hoarse, trilling miracle of a voice and an unearthly, shamanic stage manner – a maker of myths, a wearer of shawls, a genre unto herself, a woman taken by the sky.”
Nicks & The Pretenders are coming to our very own Mohegan Sun Arena in CT on Friday, November 25th. This will be about halfway through her tour. The Pretenders, having released their own album Alone in 2016, are also following up their success during this tour. Nicks is one of those musicians who is a performer for life. She will continue to sing and play until there’s nothing left in her. Seeing hits like “Rhiannon” and some of her newer songs in person is a token to her extensive career and wild spirit.
Charlie Daniels Birthday Jam: Bridgestone Arena│Nashville, TN│November 30th
Charlie Daniels is celebrating in style. His 80th Birthday Jam is following his induction to the Country Music Hall of Fame. However, The Charlie Daniels Band and his Volunteer Jam will not be solo. Kid Rock, Larry the Cable Guy and Chris Stapleton are a few of the big name accompanying him for the concert of a lifetime. Luke Bryan is also playing; therefore, Charlie Daniels Birthday Jam is a marriage between old and new country.
On Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena website, Daniels is quoted saying, “This year, I will celebrate two milestones: my 80th birthday and the Volunteer Jam. It’s pretty amazing that we’re both alive and kicking and still going strong. Ain’t it good to be alive and be in Tennessee!” This event is the culmination of what makes country music so popular. All different generations come together in celebration of, yes, Daniels’ birthday, but also for the love of the music. Daniels promotes this as a laid-back show unlike the usual concert set-up fashion. It’s more a jam session that huge production, bringing the roots of country to the forefront.
In addition, a portion of the proceeds will go to worthy causes such as The Journey Home Project that helps veterans in the U.S. Armed Forces. It’s truly a collaborative, sentimental celebration of Nashville’s musical relevance.
Billy Joel: Madison Square Garden│New York, NY│November 30th
Billy Joel, the Piano Man himself, calls one of the most iconic venues in the country his home. Born in the Bronx, New York has always been the origination of Joel. Madison Square Garden is full of such history as one of New York City’s benchmarks. Joel is known by countless classics including “Only the Good Die Young,” “It’s Still Rock N’ Roll To Me,” and, of course, “Piano Man.”
Joel established the first music franchise at Madison Square Garden; unprecedented, as he’s now a resident of the World’s Most Famous Arena. In addition, Joel joins the Kicks, Rangers, and Liberty as MSG residents. Therefore, the city truly continues to be his home. Joel sticks to his performative guns and normally plays piano for a large chunk of his shows. Joel’s career has spanned over forty years, and he will continue to be a talent treasure for years to come.
Celine Dion: Caesars Palace – Colosseum│Las Vegas, NV│November 26th
Celine Dion returned to the Colosseum at Caesars Palace following the death of René Angélil, Dion’s longtime manager and husband. It was a heartbreaking time across the world, and Dion decided to keep his legacy alive and return to the Colosseum weeks after his death in early 2016. After a tour in Europe and Québec, Dion returned again to Vegas’ Colosseum later this year, and her November 26th show demonstrates her historical run at the Vegas venue.
Furthermore, her single “Encore un soir” dedicated to René skyrocketed to No. 1 after being released earlier this year. Her French album was released this fall and will be followed by an English one. Therefore, Dion seems to be continuing to please her fans while also paying tribute to René and coping with the great loss. A Dion concert at the Colosseum is not just a concert; it truly stands for her career, her artistry, and her ability to metamorphose with life’s hardships. She constantly proves that her heart and life will go on… adapting as one of the most famous singers in history.
What’s In Tune
Gunslinger is Brooks’ 10th studio album. The mega country star already released a Christmas album with wife Trisha Yearwood. However, much like Brooks’ huge career, he never slows down.
1. “Honky-Tonk Somewhere”
3. “Ask Me How I Know”
4. “Baby, Let’s Lay Down and Dance”
5. “He Really Loves You”
6. “Whiskey to Wine”
7. “BANG! BANG!”
8. “Pure Adrenaline”
11. “Cowboys and Friends” (Target exclusive track)
12. “Friends in Low Places” (25th anniversary edition) (Target exclusive track)
Brooks has lacked finding radio time in recent years among all the other huge country stars and the new ones recently born. However, this fan base and concert attendance never lack. Hopefully this album will push him back on the airwaves. He performed “Whiskey to Wine” with Trisha Yearwood at this year’s CMAs, and critics are calling it the “best pure country performance that the singer has ever turned in” (Taste of Country). Many of Brooks’ recent albums are compilations of his classics or hugely collaborative, while Gunslinger forces the attention back on Brooks. It’s his comeback, groove-back album that will hopefully spark more current hits for the country star going on tour in 2017.
The Weeknd is arguably the industry’s biggest current R&B star. The sultry, dark, fascinating singer is following up his success of Beauty Behind the Madness. His single “Starboy,” dropped in September, made headway for The Weeknd’s new album Starboy. The album features many of the industry’s greats including Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey, Future, and Daft Punk. Any of those names alone could carry a song’s success, so the collaborations are highly anticipated. The singles released so far have been “Starboy,” “Party Monster,” “False Alarm,” and “I Feel It Coming.” These singles carry the heavy yet smooth vibe that fans have fallen in love with, yet David Bowie and Prince can also be heard inspiring the sounds behind these tracks.
The Weeknd also announced a visual piece Mania to accompany the album. It dropped November 23rd, and it is followed in the footsteps of Beyoncé’s Lemonade to use lengthy, detailed visuals along with new music. Watch Mania in full below.

YG’s new album is unlike typical mixtapes on the market. Check the price tag. Red Friday is a limited released for a whopping $100. He tweeted about this unique aspect of the album:
— YG (@YG) November 22, 2016
These CDs will come with extra perks for that $100 investment including an autographed tape. It will be the first solo tape since Just Re’d Up 2 in 2013. YG’s music has been a source of controversy recently, as 4 University of Louisiana-Lafayette athletes were disciplined after playing the anti-Trump “FDT” in their locker room. Fans can expect YG to continue to try to make big statements, and this unique mixtape drop is just another example.
