New Kids on the Block is coming to stages in 2017. The group is forging forward yet looking back. This is because they’re continuing their trend of bringing oldies but goodies on tour with them. Once, it was the Backstreet Boys. Then TLC and Nelly. Now, NKOTB’s “Total Package Tour” will bring Boyz II Men and Paula Abdul on tour from May to July 2017. “The Total Package Tour” will include huge cities like Boston, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and Canadian stops, as well.
Though NKOTB has not released new music, this tour follows their recent bi-annual touring trend that keeps fans content. The group toured in 2011 with the Backstreet Boys, labeling their collaborative album and tour NKOTBSB (a mixed acronym for their two names). They then toured in 2013, titled “The Package Tour,” for their album 10, the most recent studio album for the group. Most recently, their “The Main Event Tour” in 2015 included throwbacks Nelly and TLC. This trend to bring-the-band-back-together constantly keeps NKOTB in forward motion. Fans love to see their favorites that might not have performed recently on tour; it’s the sweet spot of lineups for those who miss 90’s artists.
Paula Abdul is the biggest surprise in “The Total Package Tour” lineup. The performer-turned-American-Idol-judge is coming back into the spotlight. This is a rare occurrence, and for any Abdul fans, it’s a stroke of good luck. Abdul’s last tour was almost 15 years ago, and she hasn’t released a studio album in a little over 10. Therefore, this tour will be a total ode to her 90’s streak. Abdul won a “Best Music Video – Short Form” Grammy for “Opposites Attract” in 1991 and two Primetime Emmy Awards for “Outstanding Choreography” in 1987 and 1990. Comeback? Maybe. But nod to her fans? Definitely.
Boyz II Men is another exciting surprise to NKOTB’s tour that is relighting an R&B fire for fans. The tour name is actually a play off of NKOTB’s tour with Boyz II Men and 98 Degrees titled “The Package Tour” back in 2013. Their last album was semi-recent; in 2014, they released Collide. Boyz II Men’s R&B is known to contrive emotion through ballads, and their ability to perform a cappella parts of songs made them a hit.
NKOTB continues to keep the 90’s in the twenty-first century with their tours featuring established stars. It’s exciting to see some of the industry’s best step back into the hot spotlight. The tour will surely be as its name implies: the total package.
