What’s In Tune: New Music
Humanz is Gorillaz’s first album since 2010. The virtual band surged forward since their formation, passing barriers of what is needed to be a successful band. Who would pay money to go see a concert without any live performers? Gorillaz figured it out. Created in 1998, Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett are the masterminds behind Gorillaz. It consists of four animated members called Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, 2-D, and Russel Hobbs. The “Humanz Tour” begins in July and goes through October, skipping August with no tour dates.
Humanz is the band’s fifth studio album. In interviews, Albarn has stated that, while Humanz isn’t completely political, it is a response to the current emotional climate. Gorillaz are also hosting the “Humanz House Party” that is the “largest ever geo-specific listening experience,” so that fans can use the app to hear the new album in a unique listening experience. A Gorillaz television show is also forming, as Hewlett leaked the news in a Q Magazine interview. They also performed live in New York City the Tuesday preceding the album release, gearing up for their busy summer.

John Mellencamp, or John Cougar Mellencamp, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. His new album Sad Clowns & Hillbillies is his first since 2014’s Plain Spoken. Carlene Carter is a prominent figure on the album, and she is touring with Mellencamp this summer on his tour. Emmylou Harris and folk duo Lily & Madeline will also be opening on the “Sad Clowns & Hillbillies Tour.” The album birthed out of collaborations between Mellencamp and Carter, originally a vision as a collection of spiritual country songs.
Martina McBride features on the song “Grandview” off the album, and its country roots focus on the current state of American affairs. In “Easy Target,” Mellencamp ponders over the country’s “broken heart.” This includes topics such as systemic racism, discrimination, and the general polarization of America. Therefore, Mellencamp focuses more on a realistic, common-man state rather than a lectured standpoint from a ‘greater-than-thou.’ This is classic Mellencamp: dissecting the normalcies and expanding on the true American rather than a Hollywood version. Mellencamp is the oldened version of Ed Sheeran: though their talent level differences are arguable, each really wants you to believe he understands the everyday-man. No matter how many supermodels he’s dated.
Sad Clowns & Hillbillies Tracklist:
1. “Mobile Blue”
2. “Battle of Angels”
3. “Grandview” (featuring Martina McBride)
4. “Indigo Sunset”
5. “What Kind of Man am I”

Willie Nelson│God’s Problem Child│B
Willie Nelson is one of the last remaining country stars of the ever-fading older generation. His iconic status makes for a legend. The title track in God’s Problem Child delves into just that. “I’m Not Dead” references the fake announcements of Nelson’s death and his point of view as a bystander of his own death announcements. Nelson also attacks the past election season in “Delete and Fast-Forward.” However, the lead single “A Woman’s Love” strays far from those tougher subjects to focus on the simple wonders of caring for another.
Nelson, it’s important to note, is 84. Therefore, “aged musician” cannot even relate to producing songs eight decades later. This amount of time can be felt within God’s Problem Child, as Nelson uses reflection and nostalgia throughout his work. The new album also includes an ode to Merle Haggard, Nelson’s friend and fellow country idol, who passed away. Nelson skillfully uses time and his wisdom to delve into the fragility of life and danger of its unknown result. God’s Problem Child is an album only feasible by one who has lived through it all and sees the end approaching.
God’s Problem Child Tracklist:
1. “Little House on the Hill”
2. “Old Timer”
3. “True Love”
4. “Delete and Fast Forward”
5. “A Woman’s Love”
6. “Your Memory Has a Mind Of Its Own”
8. “Still Not Dead”
9. “God’s Problem Child”
10. “It Gets Easier”
11. “Lady Luck”
12. “I Made a Mistake”
13. “He Won’t Ever Be Gone”
Young M.A.│Herstory (EP)
Young M.A. is a gay, female rapper defying all odds of what female rapping should sound like. Her hit single “OOOUUU” sounds on par with any other playboy rapper in the industry, and that’s frankly her point. Young M.A. can stay up with the rest of them, and her EP Herstory demonstrates her ability to keep up with the guys. No frills or pink here; feminine hip-hop doesn’t need it.
Katy Perry│”Bon Appetit” featuring Migos
Katy Perry’s highly-anticipated follow up to “Chained to the Rhythm” leaked earlier this week, and Perry came back by releasing info regarding the cover art, date, and feature. Migos, everyone’s favorite feature artist at the moment, is on this track with her. Migos impressed everyone with Culture earlier this year, but already this song sounds like another bad, mainstream collab hiding behind big names to smooth over its lack of uniqueness. My thought is Migos should concentrate more on pounding out another album and keep their heads on straight and less on hip-hopping around on songs that are beneath their level. Let’s hope this one proves me wrong.
