Top Five Live

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Duke Blue Devils – March 4th @ Dean E. Smith Center

A rivalry rematch is a must for Top Five Live. UNC seemed to have control in enemy territory, but a late rally from Duke enabled them to pull out a victory. North Carolina is ready to exact revenge.

Duke is one of the best teams in the country that closely resemble a Jekyll and Hyde personality. At their best, they can dominate ranked teams and easily come away with wins. On the other hand, lapses in concentration (cough, Grayson Allen) can doom them in untimely losses. Although Grayson Allen gets his fair share of criticism, the kid can ball. Allen is the unquestioned leader on Duke, and his teammates love playing with him. He can shoot the three, drive the ball, and either finish at the rim or kick it to a wide open shooter. Speaking of wide open shooters, Luke Kennard is lethal from all points on the floor. His NBA future could see him as a professional scorer, but for now he leads Duke with 19.8 PPG.

UNC is comparable to an expensive foreign car. Usually on the highway with no one in front of them, the Heels can speed up and down the court with ease. However, on rare occasions when the terrain gets a little tougher, UNC can be frustrating to watch. With impressive wins over Louisville, Virginia and and NC State, UNC can look like the best team in the country. A 53-43 loss last week to Virginia has the best analysts scratching their heads a bit when it comes to the Tar Heels.

Liverpool vs. Arsenal – March 4th @ Anfield

One of the English Premier League’s biggest rivalries will be turned up a notch this weekend. In the EPL, it is every team’s goal to win the league. However, once that is settled, the rest of the league shoots to finish in the top four. The top four teams qualify for the UEFA Champions League, the most prolific tournament a club team can qualify for.

Arsenal is currently in the coveted fourth position, while Liverpool is slipping fast. Liverpool has lost three of their last five matches, and with the season winding down, it’s the wrong time for poor form. As a result, Liverpool will be the aggressor at home against their rivals this weekend.

Liverpool has a creative force of players, but their inability to physically dominate other teams might be their downfall. Look for rising star Sadio Mane to make an impact. He is the team’s leading scorer with 11 goals. From the midfield, Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho are some of the most inventive players every time they step on the pitch. With precision passing and dazzling dribbling skills, they are bound to set up and or score a few goals on Saturday.

As for Arsenal, their title aspirations have withered once again this season. They are still in the driver’s seat for a spot in the Champions League, but taking care of business on Saturday is crucial. Arsenal has one significant difference, their top man on the roster is world class. Alexis Sanchez is one of the most dynamic players the EPL has ever seen. With 17 goals, Sanchez sits atop the league with a few other players. He also leads Arsenal with 8 assists, displaying exactly how important he is to the Gunners’ success.

Liverpool won a brilliant shootout on the road in the first meeting between the two sides.

UFC 209 – Woodley vs. Thompson II – March 4th @ T-Mobile Arena

Many people will point to UFC 205 being a historic point in the UFC. Superstar Conor McGregor winning his second belt at the first event ever hosted at Madison Square Garden is currently the pinnacle for the sport. UFC 209 can come close to topping it with a card filled with entertaining fights.

At the top of the list is a title fight in the Welterweight division between Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson. A majority draw was the decision last time and fans cannot wait for the rematch. Both fighters were shocked with the decision in their prior fight. As a result, both will come out swinging to prove that they were the winner at UFC 205.

The fight prior includes a match up for the Lightweight Interim title. Khabib Nurmagomedov has never lost a professional MMA feat in over 20 bouts, an incredible feat. On the other hand, Tony Ferguson has won nine fights in a row and believes he will easily make it ten. Both are masters when it comes to grappling and taking the fight to the ground. Expect this fight to be one of the most exciting of the year, and to end in a submission.

Other fights include Rashad Evans much anticipated return to the octagon against Dan Kelly. Also, two top ten contenders in the Heavyweight division square off when Alistair Overeem takes on Mark Hunt.

New York Knicks vs. Golden State Warrirors – March 5th @ Madison Square Garden

The Warriors were an amazing team prior to signing Kevin Durant this offseason. With him on their roster, they were a shoe-in to win the Finals. Unfortunately, KD recently suffered a knee injury that is keeping him on the sideline indefinitely. Reports have disclosed that it is an MCL sprain, and the recovery times for those injuries always vary.

Golden State has no time to complain at this point in the season. Life without KD will be interesting, and one of the first tests will come against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. With KD, the Warriors would most likely blow out the Knicks. With team morale affected due to his loss, the Knicks will have a chance to pounce and put forth their best effort against the Warriors. Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson will assume their normal roles and should be able to adjust accordingly.

As for the Knicks, they have been a team in the news for all the wrong reasons. Phil Jackson seems unenthusiastic whenever the topic of his star player, Carmelo Anthony, comes up. Their owner also recently banned an ex-player and fan favorite Charles Oakley. The ban was lifted but long after the damage was already done.

Derrick Rose has stayed healthy throughout the season, a major plus for the Knicks. Carmelo Anthony is still a threat offensively, but it seems as if the team is never on the same page. New York has struggled as a result, and another season where one of the league’s marquis franchises misses the playoffs.

BNP Paribas Showdown: Juan Martin Del Potro vs. Kei Nishikori – March 6th @ Madison Square Garden

On Monday, Top Five Live throws another sport in to the mix. Besides the Australian Open, tennis is on the back burner in the sports world during the first couple months of the year. That will all change when some of the biggest names in the game head to Madison Square Garden. Rarely a venue for tennis, Madison Square Garden always sells out for the BNP Paribas Showdown.

The main event will be Argentinian Juan Martin Del Potro against the Japanese up-and-comer Kei Nishikori. Nishikori is an interesting player. He has yet to win a major title, but is currently ranked 5th in the world. His game is defensive-minded and he uses his stamina to his advantage. Nishikori has the ability to frustrate his opponent every time he steps on to the court.

His opponent will Juan Martin Del Potro. It wasn’t at Madison Square Garden, but the biggest moment of Del Potro’s career did come in New York. Undoubtedly, his best years are behind him. The energetic Argentine burst on to the scene in 2009 with an impressive run in almost every Grand Slam. He capped the year off by winning the U.S. Open against Roger Federer. Injuries have derailed Del Potro’s career.

A man with strength, size and speed that could have enjoyed a career similar to Novak Djokovic’s was never able to reach his full potential. He has shown signs of the player that we once knew and loved, but only time will tell if he’ll be able to win another major.

The women will be well-represented at MSG as well. 2016 French Open Champion Garbiñe Muguruza will take on the Hall-of-Famer Venus Williams. Venus is 36, but just reached the Australian Open Final in 2017, proving she can still compete with the best in the world.

Top Five Live: The King Takes On an Old Friend and an Old Foe

Top Five Live

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Philadelphia Flyers – 2/25 @ Heinz Field

Usually reserved for the Winter Classic around New Year’s Day, the NHL has expanded its outdoor schedule due to high demand from the fans. This game should be one of the best to date in the NHL Stadium Series as well. The Pittsburgh Penguins–Philadelphia Flyers rivalry is one of the most heated in the league.

Pittsburgh is on fire this season. The defending Stanley Cup Champions are picking up right where they left off. Sidney Crosby recently reached another NHL milestone as he became the 86th player in NHL history to tally 1,000 points.

Evgeni Malkin is still a huge factor in their offense. Known mostly for his incredible ability to score, Malkin has become the playmaker this year. He leads the team with 35 assists. Goalie Matt Murray is one of the youngest keepers in the league at 22. However, he is gaining valuable experience at such a young age, and is becoming an asset for the Pens.

The Flyers will look to play the role of spoiler during Pittsburgh’s party at Heinz Field, the usual home of the Steelers. Philly has an outside chance at a playoff spot, but with end of the season nearing they will need to start winning. A win against their heated rivals could set them up for a late season run. All-Star MVP Wayne Simmonds leads the team with 25 goals, and winger Jakub Voracek has tallied 49 points. This duo will need to step up in this game for the Flyers to have a chance to win. Chipping away at Murray’s confidence will be key.

A win in this game for Pittsburgh gets them that much closer to the #1 seed in the East. A Philadelphia win could potentially tie them for the #8 seed in the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Chicago Bulls – 2/25 @ Quicken Loans Arena

A game that features LeBron James and Dwyane Wade on separate teams will always be interesting. The two won a couple championships while teammates on the Miami Heat. However, just a couple years removed from that, the two are now on separate teams. The King returned to the Cleveland Cavaliers and D Wade has since returned home to play for the Chicago Bulls.

LeBron fulfilled his promise to the city of Cleveland by winning an NBA title, and Wade is playing some productive basketball in front of his hometown fans. Interestingly enough, this could very well be a first round playoff match up.

The Cavaliers have battled through some crucial injuries, and still find themselves atop the Eastern Conference. LeBron and Kyrie Irving have been putting on a display all season long. The Cavs and their fans will welcome back J.R. Smith and Kevin Love in March. Both are recovering from injuries that occurred earlier in the season.

Chicago has battled chemistry issues all season, but their talented roster has kept them afloat. All-Star Jimmy Butler has been one of the brightest young stars in the NBA and has teamed up with Wade and Rajon Rondo. The Bulls’ deficiencies stem from their lack of offensive versatility. This will be a tough game for Chicago, but Wade usually saves his best games for when he faces off against his good friend LeBron James.

Kentucky Wildcats vs. Florida Gators – 2/25 @ Rupp Arena

College basketball is reaching the home stretch. One of the most exciting times for all sports fans is March Madness. With that in mind, every game left in the regular season has a monumental impact. Bubble implications and conference tournament seeding is now part of the equation.

In the SEC, the top spot in the conference standings is still up for grabs. Florida has already beaten Kentucky on their home floor, and now the Wildcats are looking to return the favor at a critical point in the season.

Florida is currently 23-5 on the season, and 13-2 in conference play. The Gators have a trio of upperclassmen that are playing some of the best basketball in their career. Kasey Hill, Devin Robinson and Canyon Barry are integral parts of the Florida offense. Hill is the floor general while Robinson is an athletic wing that can score and guard. Barry comes off the bench and is a lethal shooter from 3-point range. He is one of of the leading candidates for Sixth Man of the Year in the SEC.

As for Kentucky, it’s a different year, but the same story. Their freshman have steadily matured over the course of the season, and heading in to March they are looking like a viable contender. Malik Monk and DeAaron Fox are both strong candidates for SEC Freshman of the Year as well as SEC Player of the Year.

Coach John Calipari is as pivotal of a piece as any of the players on his team. His tough love approach guides his team when the biggest games of the season are upcoming. This Saturday, Kentucky’s will and toughness will be tested as they go for another SEC regular season championship.

Washington Wizards vs. Golden State Warriors – 2/28 @ Verizon Center

With a record of 47-9, the Golden State Warriors have been hot all season. However, no team has played better in 2017 than the Washington Wizards. Their ascension in the Eastern Conference has been shocking due to their previous form. John Wall has been on a tear, but he has not done it alone.

He is getting help from young athletic forwards that are finding their game in the extremely difficult NBA. Otto Porter Jr., Kelly Oubre, and Markieff Morris are all versatile players that can shoot the three almost as well as they can shoot the three. Those two skills are some of the most important in the rapidly changing NBA.

On the other hand, Golden State has continued to be a well-oiled machine. All-Stars Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Kevin Durant have yet to peak this season, a scary thought for the rest of the league.

This will be a pivotal match up with the Wizards to see where they stack up with the league’s elite. So far, their run has consisted of taking advantage of teams that are sliding in the opposite direction of Washington. They lost an overtime thriller to Cavaliers recently, so another major test looms when the Wizards defend their home court against the Warriors.

Boston Celtics vs. Cleveland Cavaliers – 3/1 @ TD Garden

Throughout his career, LeBron James has had one constant thorn in his side. The Boston Celtics have tried to thwart the ascension of King James ever since he was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003. He has faced them numerous times in the Eastern Conference Playoffs with varying levels of success. When Boston had a Big 3 that consisted of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett, their constant pressure forced LeBron to leave for Miami.

In Miami, he gained the upper hand in the rivalry and exacted revenge every chance he could get. In turn, his dominance cause Boston to disband and rebuild. LeBron has since returned to Cleveland and fulfilled the only goal he had in his career, winning a title for the city that helped raise him.

Boston has slowly but surely rebuilt as well. With Isaiah Thomas, a player who couldn’t be more different from LeBron, the Celtics are once again nipping at his heels.

The Cavaliers currently have a three game lead over the Celtics in the Eastern Conference, and this game could easily be the Eastern Conference Finals preview.

The two stars recently spent All-Star weekend together as teammates, but expect the atmosphere to be drastically different in the hostile environment that is TD Garden.

Top Five Live: Conference Titles on the Line in College Basketball

February 16, 2017 by Nate

Top Five Live

Washington Wizards vs. Indiana Pacers – Bankers Life Fieldhouse, 2/16

Nothing screams Top Five Live like a potential playoff match up.

The Wizards are thriving right now as the NBA season nears the All-Star Break. The team was seemingly in a free-fall that started at the beginning of last season. Since the beginning of December, they have been one of the best teams in the league. From battling for a playoff spot to a legitimate contender in the Eastern Conference, the Wizards are now the three seed.

Bradley Beal and John Wall have returned to their All-Star form, and that is when the Wizards are at their best. Wall is averaging 23 points and 11 assists, and is doing a superb job of leading the Wizards on and off the court.

Indiana is currently entrenched in the six seed in the Eastern Conference. A crop of new faces are responsible for the Pacers’ resurgence this season. Jeff Teague and Thaddeus Young are new to the team, but fitting right in with the rising stars the Pacers had in place.

Paul George has been one of the most impressive players in the league since a gruesome leg injury almost ended his career. With George leading the team, the Pacers are bound for the playoffs. Additionally, a win against the Wizards could point them in the right direction heading in to the second half of the season.

Boston Celtics vs. Chicago Bulls – United Center, 2/16

Basketball royalty is also an easy choice for Top Five Live. Two of the most storied franchises in the history of the NBA will be playing in the final game before the All-Star break.

The Bulls let go of their hometown kid Derrick Rose, but welcomed back Dwyane Wade, another Chicago native. He has teamed up with veteran Rajon Rondo and All-Star Jimmy Butler. Chicago has been inconsistent to say the least. Their 27-29 record and locker room controversies are evidence of this, but they are still such a talented team. The weaker Eastern Conference is easier to stay afloat in, and the Bulls are hanging on to a playoff spot.

Boston is the little engine that could, led by that exact same thing. The 5′ 8″ Isaiah Thomas is one of the NBA’s smallest players, but he has the biggest heart. He is averaging 29 points per game, good enough for second in the league. The rest of the squad is gritty, defensive-minded, and will do whatever it takes to win.

The Celtics have immense talent but have yet to prove they belong in the postseason. Al Horford was added to the roster in the off season to add some postseason experience. Chicago has a plethora of playoff experience between their three stars, so if these two teams meet in the playoffs it will be interesting to see how much of a factor experience truly is.

Kansas Jayhawks vs. Baylor Bears – Ferrell Center, 2/18

A top five tilt is another welcome addition to Top Five Live. The Baylor Bears and Kansas Jayhawks are set for Round 2 this season. Kansas protected their home court, squeaking out a 73-68 win just over two weeks ago. Baylor has lost three of their last five, but started the season 20-1. This match up will go a long way in deciding who wins the regular season Big 12 title, making it must-see.

Baylor needs this win to stabilize its season. They started the season off on fire, and reached the No. 1 spot in the country for the first time in the school’s history. Expectations skyrocketed and pressure mounted. They lost Kansas and Texas Tech on the road, and in between that they fell to Kansas State as well. Notching a win against Kansas on their home floor will turn the season around as it reaches the home stretch.

Baylor is are two games behind Kansas in the Big 12 Title race, and will rely on their big man to have a big game. Johnathan Motley is the best player on their roster, and is averaging 16.7 points and 9.5 rebounds a game. He disappeared in the second half of the first meeting between these two teams, aiding in the Kansas comeback.

The Jayhawks have been here before. The program has won 11 straight Big 12 regular season titles, and are on pace for number 12. The back court is led by Frank Mason III (Big 12 Player of the Year candidate) and Devonte’ Graham, a three-point specialist that rarely makes a mistake on the floor. Josh Jackson’s emergence throughout his freshman season has been vital for Kansas. They can be really good without him, but exceptional when he shows up to play.

I’m expecting another close game, as Baylor is ready to step out of the Kansas’ shadow and claim the Big 12 title.

Virginia Cavaliers vs. North Carolina Tar Heels – Dean E. Smith Center, 2/18

The always competitive Atlantic Coast Conference could likely be decided this weekend as well. North Carolina is currently in the pole position, but has a host of challengers on their heels. One of those that could steal the title from the Tar Heels is Virginia.

Virginia reached the Elite 8 in the NCAA tournament last season, and it was easily one of the most successful in the school’s history. Under Head Coach Tony Bennett, Virginia has mastered offensive efficiency and become relevant in the college basketball world. London Perrantes and Marial Shayok are the two pillars leftover from last season, and have assumed the leadership roles.

Perrantes is one of the best point guards in the nation, but if he doesn’t come to play, Virginia often struggles.

North Carolina has strength in numbers. Their depth and pace are their biggest weapons, and they are on the short list of teams that could cut down the nets this season. They have four players averaging double figures on the season, and can attack with perimeter or post players. Justin Jackson is becoming a star in Chapel Hill, and Kennedy Meeks has been a force in the paint all season.

Home floor should help the Tar Heels in this contest, but this one should be close throughout.

Montreal Canadiens vs. New York Rangers – Madison Square Garden, 2/21

The finale of this week’s Top Five Live features two NHL teams jockeying for playoff position. Eastern Conference foes currently seeded in the 4th and 5th position will take the ice at Madison Square Garden.

The New York Rangers are currently the 4th seed with Montreal hot on their heels. A win for the Montreal Candiens in this contest would bring Montreal within two points of the Rangers. With just over 20 games left in the regular season, every game counts.

Michael Grabner and Chris Kreider are the team’s most lethal scorers. Both in the 20-goal club, they will be the catalyst for the Rangers’ offense if they wish to make a deep playoff run. J.T. Miller is the team’s leader in points, hinting at the fact that his well-rounded game is another key to their success.

Montreal has the perfect weapon to try and shut down the Rangers and secure a crucial road win. Their stingy defense is led by defenseman Shea Weber and goalie Carey Price.

Max Pacioretty is the team’s leading scorer, and will need to score or set up a few goals while his defense tries to contain the Rangers.

Expect both teams to bring it on Tuesday night. This game is on track to be a first round playoff preview in the Eastern Conference.

Top Five Live: Cavaliers, Clippers Look to Rebound and a Fight Night in Houston

February 2, 2017 by Nate

Top Five Live

Don’t worry, Top Five Live did not forget about Super Bowl Sunday in Houston. The magnitude of that game deserves its own blog post, and TicketNetwork has all aspects of it covered.

However, the focus for this blog post shifts to other professional sports. NBA teams will look to snap out of their January slumber while Canadian hockey teams are readying for a rivalry. A prolific golf tournament makes the cut this week and finally the Super Bowl is not the only event taking place in Houston this weekend.

Waste Management Phoenix Open – TPC Scottsdale – 2/2-2/5

Known as, “The Greatest Show on Grass,” the Waste Management Phoenix Open is a huge event early on in the golf season. The tournament attracts big name players who need a sufficient tune up before their season schedule amps up.

Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, Bubba Watson and Patrick Reed are the headliners heading in to this week. All are fan favorites and could take home the trophy this weekend. Defending champion Hideki Matsuyama will like his chances as well. A strong Sunday performance and a win in a playoff against Fowler boosted Matsuyama’s confidence in 2016.

The TPC Scottsdale in Arizona is also one of the best environments on the PGA Tour. The tournament is especially known for one hole that abandons all the rules of golf. Known for precision, patience and a gentlemen’s attitude, the 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale embodies none of the above.

The crowd is not just allowed to get rowdy and cheer while a player is preparing and taking their shot, it is encouraged. A good shot at the par-3 16th hole is accompanied with a wave of cheers while a bad shot is always booed.

Waste Management Phoenix Open has a little bit of everything, and the 16th hole is an experience worth seeing or being a part of.

Los Angeles Clippers vs. Golden State Warriors @ Staples Center – 2/2

The Clippers and Warriors were picked by most analysts to represent the West in the Western Conference Finals. The  two teams are currently heading in opposite directions and the match up now seems unlikely.

The Warriors are right where we thought they’d be. Winners of 9 of their last 10, the Warriors are 41-7 this season. Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry are assimilating nicely, and that spells disaster for the rest of the league. The two are averaging a combined 51.3 points per game, making them the highest scoring duo in the league.

The Spurs are the closest competition for the Warriors, but with a 4.5 game lead the Warriors will be comfortable heading in to the All-Star break.

In Los Angeles, a once promising season is slipping away. Point guard Chris Paul suffered a thumb injury that required surgery, and his season is on hold for the time being. Blake Griffin is now controlling the reigns of the Clippers’ offense, and results may vary. Griffin is one of the most talented forwards in the league, but Paul’s reputation as the game’s best floor general was not just given to him.

The Clippers are desperate for a signature win, and a hard-fought battle against the league’s best is just what the doctor ordered.

New York Knicks vs. Cleveland Cavaliers @ Madison Square Garden – 2/4

Old pals square off once again in New York. Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James are best friends off the court, but rivals on it. It all started back in high school, when a nationally televised high school basketball game featured the two facing one another.

Since joining the NBA, their trajectories differed, but the two have crossed paths numerous times. Anthony has become one of the game’s best scorers, but for unsuccessful teams. On the other hand, LeBron James’ consistency has helped him become one of the greatest players of all-time on some of the best teams ever.

The Knicks’ season started with a lot of promise, but an early season slump thwarted their momentum and led to trade rumors and dysfunction. The Knicks are still in the running for a playoff spot, but the team and fans figured they would be much farther along at this point in the season. With Derrick Rose and Kristaps Porzingis, the future is bright in New York, but something is still a little off in the Big Apple.

Speaking of something being a little off, the Cavaliers have a had a rough start to 2017. Their 7-8 record was the first time King James had a losing record for an entire month since 2006. With trade and free agent rumors swirling, the Cavs have the look of an insecure team despite winning the NBA title in dramatic fashion last season.

LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love need to avoid the media bait and focus on strengthening the team during this difficult stretch leading up to the All-Star break. A dominant performance on national TV will do just that.

UFC Fight Night – Bermudez vs. Korean Zombie @ Toyota Center – 2/4

The Super Bowl is hoarding the headlines in Houston, and deservedly so, but the night before that Houston will host another wild night. There is a full card of exciting fights, and fans will be looking for action on the eve of the Super Bowl. The Toyota Center is usually home to the Houston Rockets, but the UFC will be a welcome guest on February 4th.

A fighter making long-awaited comeback verses a veteran in a groove is the main event. On top of that, the card is filled with up-and-comers looking to challenge an established fighter in the UFC.

Chan Sung Jung, AKA “The Korean Zombie,” was a rising star in the UFC before the brand skyrocketed. No stranger to winning, “Knockout of the Night,” Jung earned a title shot in 2013.

He lost to UFC legend Jose Aldo for the Featherweight title, and then had to put his career on hold. A native of South Korea, he had to serve two years in the nation’s military. He was released in late 2016, and his mind immediately shifted back to fighting.

His opponent, Dennis Bermudez, is having none of this sentimental return. Currently on a two-fight win streak, Bermudez had a productive year in 2016. He has risen to the ninth ranked contender in the Featherweight division, and another win against a past star will only raise his stock in the UFC. Bermudez is at a slight disadvantage due to the fact he has no idea what to expect from Chan Sung Jung. However, his confidence due to his recent success could be a deciding factor.

Other fights garnering a lot of attention include Alexa Grasso against Felice Herrig and Ovince Saint Preux verses Volkan Oezdemir.

Edmonton Oilers vs. Montreal Canadiens @ Centre Bell – 2/5

On a global scale, no country dominates the sport of hockey like Canada. However, the NHL has been recently been dominated by markets such as Pittsburgh, Chicago and Boston. This season the Canadian clubs are making a comeback in a big way. Last year, no hockey teams from Canada made the playoffs, but thanks to a crop of young talent being drafted by Canadian teams that will change this season.

The Montreal Canadiens are historically one of the best teams in the NHL. However, their last Stanley Cup title came in 1993, and there is a new wave of fans becoming impatient with the lack of winning it all in Montreal. Montreal is in the middle of the playoff race in the Eastern Conference, currently holding on to the fourth seed. Led by Max Pacioretty and Shea Weber, the Canadiens are a dangerous team this season.

The Edmonton Oilers have been starving for a playoff appearance. They haven’t made the playoffs since 2006, a year in which they made the Stanley Cup Finals. In the 80s, Wayne Gretzky built a dynasty in Edmonton before he was traded away to the Los Angeles Kings. The decision is still known as one of the most puzzling in the history of the sport, as Gretzky is the best hockey player the world has ever seen.

It is much too early to tell, but the Oilers have another player on their roster that could have a special career. 20-year old Connor McDavid is already the team captain in Edmonton, and is one of the best young players in the NHL.

The Canadian was the first overall draft pick in 2015. He has lived up to the hype by becoming the fourth fastest player to record 100 points in the NHL.

Top Five Live: Round 2 Gets Underway in the NFL and NBA

January 12, 2017 by Nate

Top Five Live

In the first round, the NFL Playoffs got off to sub par start during Wild Card Weekend. As the playoffs move to the Divisional Round, the match ups are much more enticing.

In the NBA, Round 2 of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors season series will tip off in Oakland. The Christmas Day game was a thriller, and it will be Golden State’s turn to defend home court. Once again the regular season game will have a playoff atmosphere. Cleveland and Golden State have formed one of the strongest rivalries in the sport, and their games are must-see.

The bell for Round 2 is about to ring, but who will be ready to fight?

Atlanta Falcons vs. Seattle Seahawks – NFC Divisional Round, 1/14 @ Georgia Dome

The second round of the playoffs kicks off in Atlanta with a Week 6 rematch. The Falcons and Seahawks have met already this season, with the Seahawks grabbing the W, 26-24. However, the biggest factor in the game proved to be Seattle’s home field advantage. Since the loss, the Falcons have gone 7-3 and as a result have earned home field for this pivotal playoff match up.

The quarterback play will be imperative in this game. Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons has played at an MVP-level throughout the regular season. He threw for 4,944 yards and 38 touchdowns in one of the best regular seasons of his career.

Russell Wilson played below his standards in the regular season, but found his form last weekend against the Lions during the first weekend of the NFL Playoffs. Wilson looked sharp and threw for two touchdowns in an easy 26-6 win.

Quarterbacks are accustomed to the spotlight, so lets give some recognition to the men trying to stop them.

For Atlanta, it will be the newest elite edge-rusher in the NFL. Vic Beasley is coming off of a monster year after racking up a league leading 15.5 sacks. He will look to pin his ears back and get after the elusive Wilson. An even bigger stat for Beasley is the 6 forced fumbles he had this season. If Atlanta gets an early lead Beasley can be dangerous.

On the other hand, Cliff Avril is just as impressive for Seattle. With 11.5 sacks and 5 forced fumbles, Avril is a game changer as well.

Ball security will be key for these quarterbacks. The head-to-head match up between Beasley and Avril will be one to watch, with the advantage going to whichever team can benefit from the big plays they are bound to make.

New England Patriots vs. Houston Texans – AFC Divisional Round, 1/14 @ Gillette Stadium

In the AFC, another regular season rematch will unfold in Foxborough.

It is near impossible to beat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in the month of January. One of the coolest customers in NFL history, Brady is known for destroying opposing teams’ defensive game plans. This weekend he will go up against former New England defensive coordinator, Romeo Crennel.

Sans J.J. Watt, the Texans were still able to establish themselves as the number one ranked defense in the NFL. They are solid at all levels, especially with rising star Jadeveon Clowney asserting himself as a force to be reckoned with. He will need to step up if the Texans want to change the narrative from their regular season game.

New England embarrassed Houston this season. An easy 27-0 win was a walk in the park for the Pats.

The Patriots come in to this game healthy, well-rested and confident, a dangerous combination for a superior team to possess. Brady lost his main weapon this season, tight end Rob Gronkowski, but still has an extensive arsenal. Martellus Bennett has stepped up after the loss of Gronk, while Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan and newcomer Michael Floyd are exceptional options on the outside.

If all else fails, LeGarrette Blount will spearhead a dynamic running attack featuring Dion Lewis and James White.

Blount had one of his best games of the season against Houston, and his physical running style will be a factor this weekend in the frigid conditions.

All that adds up to the Texans being in big trouble. Brady will look slice through the Houston defense while the Patriots get once step closer to Houston, the site of Super Bowl LI.

Kansas City Chiefs vs. Pittsburgh Steelers – AFC Divisional Round, 1/15 @ Arrowhead Stadium

Sunday starts off with a bang. Playoff football in Kansas City will be the definition of deafening this upcoming weekend. Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City is one of the loudest stadiums in the country. The volume will be cranked up for the playoffs, and the Steelers have a tough task ahead of them.

The Steelers destroyed the Chiefs earlier this season 43-14. However, that loss will only add to the motivation of Kansas City fans come Sunday.

Pittsburgh’s offense features two of the best skill players to ever enter the NFL. Wide receiver Antonio Brown seemingly sets records every time he catches the ball. His dynamic ability was on display last weekend with two touchdowns in the first quarter against the Dolphins.

Dual-threat running Le’Veon Bell is poetry in motion out of the backfield. His patience might be his best attribute, and although I like to avoid hyperbole, Bell is on pace to be one of the best running backs of all-time if he continues on the pace he has established throughout his young career.

Even though it is hard to believe after their Week 2 match up, the Chiefs have all the necessary players on defense to slow down the Steelers. Their two key players that need to show up on Sunday will be cornerback Marcus Peters and safety Eric Berry.

Among others on the Chiefs’ defense, these two have the complete skill set to compete with Brown and Bell. Marcus Peters (6 INTs this season) has become one of the best cover corners in the league so his task will be to slow down Brown. Eric Berry (77 tackles, 4 INTs) is a physical safety that can stop the run, but he’ll also be chasing Bell around the field after he makes catches from the running back position.

The duo that can have a more productive game on Sunday will provide his team with a big edge.

Dallas Cowboys vs. Green Bay Packers – NFC Divisional Round, 1/15 @ AT&T Stadium

The finale of the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs will be a hotly contested rematch in Dallas. The last time these two teams met during the playoffs was in 2015. Tony Romo and Aaron Rodgers were locked in an intense duel, and one unforgettable play changed the course of the game.

On a critical 4th down late in the 4th quarter with the Cowboys trailing by 5, Tony Romo went to his favorite target Dez Bryant. Bryant appeared to catch the ball for a touchdown, but it hit the ground as he extended for the end zone. The call was eventually overturned and it is still a controversial debate to this day. The Packers escaped with a 26-21 win, and the Cowboys have wanted revenge ever since.

The script has flipped in this upcoming game. Dallas has the more complete team, and will be hosting Green Bay on this occasion. The Cowboys finished the regular season at 13-3, and with their rookie QB Dak Prescott and a mammoth offensive line they like their chances.

On the other hand, Rodgers has led the Packers on a 7-game winning streak. Green Bay is the hottest team in the league, but will they be able to slow down Dallas’ efficient offense.

Ezekiel Elliott will be the key to the Cowboys advancing. His rookie campaign was impressive has he tallied over 1,600 rushing yards and 15 TDs.

The wily vet on the Green Bay defense, Clay Matthews, will look to plug up any gaps Elliott looks for in the run game. This one-on-one match up will be one to keep an eye on, and could ultimately decide the outcome of the game.

Golden State Warriors vs. Cleveland Cavaliers – NBA Finals Rematch, 1/16 @ Oracle Arena

It is Round 2 for this regular season, but this is a battle that dates back to the 2015 NBA Finals. Over the course of the last two NBA Finals and the Christmas Day game this season, the series between these two juggernauts is tied at 7. An epic back-and-forth rivalry, each team knows the other’s strengths and weaknesses almost as well as their own.

Familiarity has led to hostility, and this will be one of the most watched games of the regular season. Also, with Golden State and Cleveland atop their respective conferences, this game could decide who has home court if they meet for the third straight year in the NBA Finals. No matter what team you are a fan of, everyone loves seeing these two squads face off.

LeBron James and Kyrie Irving were the catalyst for a Christmas Day comeback against the Warriors. A game-winning jumper from Irving gave the Cavs and exciting 109-108 win.

The Warriors will be looking to exact revenge in Oakland. Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant are all big-time players, but with the game on the line in Cleveland, Golden State turned to Kevin Durant to take the last shot for the win.

Undoubtedly, the game will be up in the air late. Irving or James, Durant or Steph, the most intriguing question heading in to this game is who will take the last shot with the game on the line.
